The atmosphere at the event was both, festive and cheerful, a true manifestation of the Christmas spirit. 10 Top ASSL Performers were recognized in front of their executives, senior management, colleagues, friends and family.
During this formal part of the evening, ASSL's Chairman Dr. Michael Aboud (Honorary) acknowledged not only the awardees with applause but every member of the ASSL family throughout the Caribbean region for their unwavering dedication to the delivery of service in excellence. He reminded every employee, no matter what rank, that commitment, responsibility, productivity, and accountability are some of the pillars ASSL's success is built upon and some of the reasons that ASSL will continue to thrive in 2018.
"May all our employees, clients, partners, affiliates, and suppliers be blessed and enjoy a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Properous New Year".
Chairman’s Christmas Message at the Chairman's Special Awards Ceremony and Christmas Function 2017
Good evening colleagues we are gathered here tonight to enjoy each other’s company and have some fun as we wine down from a very difficult year in the history of ASSL. I have selected this venue in the hope of stimulating a level of stress relief as we enjoy each other’s company and participate in the various events which I am sure will trigger your adrenaline and stimulate your endocrine system.
It is also a period for reflection which I will speak about shortly but more importantly to recognize outstanding achievements and work performances by our dedicated and loyal staffers who have demonstrated exceptional performances in keeping with one of our mottos” Service in Excellence “and our mantra of serving selflessly and with pride, perfection and outstanding dedication.
I know the pride we all have in this family of ours the ASSL family and like any family unit the Papa Bear must protect its cubs and this we had to do in recent time in an effort to preserve the welfare of all of us and allow us to remain competitive in this very difficult and challenging market place. I must report that we have successfully made all the decisions that was necessary and we await the outcome.
Several factors remained as unknowns in this equation of successful outcome which are directly in your control and I have categorized them into four elements and not to be overly explanatory, they are Productivity, True Commitment with adequate follow up with a positive outcome, Accountability and Responsibility. It would be nice if I could put each of these very powerful words into examples.
So allow me this indulgence
For example let’s look at what a single Manager, Supervisor or RS does with his/her time while at work and the usefulness or outcome for that day and then lets look at how much work you do vs. what you put off to another time or never did. So you dealt with an officer without bringing total resolution the matter remained unresolved to his satisfaction don’t you still not have to deal with it again so why not do a proper completed job from the start.
So let me give you some good advice when your productivity level is unmatched you secure your future this should be your personal objective as you established your work ethics
- True commitment with adequate follow up and a positive outcome, I call this Escalation of commitment. - So you gave an instruction and walked away, it was not fulfilled or filled without the positive outcome so what next, well you have to invest more than just instructions you will need to commit more time more of your personal resources so that means more of everything. Why? To get the positive outcome you desired. Also don’t be an I man and an I servant this serves no one or the team.
- Accountability - The obligation at accounting for ones activities, and to disclose the results in a transparent manner. So what does this mean for us and it can simply be put in the following form when giving information to do so accurately, unbiased and truthful, we don’t need the cover-ups and smokescreen which further distracts on our efforts and limited time. So workers continued to show up late, take long breaks, and surf the internet during work hours because there was No accountability from management and this is noticeable in every sphere of our management team.
- Responsibility - I want to add the word Collective to the word Responsibility which means that every member of our team without regard to an individual member's participation in a particular decision making process inclusive of his or her position or rank has to take ownership for what we do and how we do it and ensure that the process or task is completed to the satisfaction of the whole regardless of direct or indirect involvement.
This goes to the experience, an applicant has with every one he or she comes in contact with, this goes to processing ones data accurately on the work sheet to the processing of pay, this goes to meeting deadlines which if not met affects others in their own tasks. So I ask you to fulfill your part in this equation so that a successful outcome is guaranteed otherwise we would have no alternatives but to seek out further change which I am sure will create insecurity in tenure or your ability to sustain a quality of life that you have grown to be accustomed to.
As for our outstanding Employees for their service in excellence for 2017, please allow me this opportunity to say thank you for your contributions in the various fields that you have been recognized in and I look forward to your continued efforts and significant contributions in the future thank you.
In closing I ask the Almighty God to continue to bless us and protect us and on behalf of myself and my family I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year for 2018.

MICHAEL ABOUD CHAIRMAN OF AMALGAMATED SECURITY SERVICES LIMITED RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTOR OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
The University of Trinidad & Tobago honored our Chairman, Mr. Michael Aboud with a Honorary Doctor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Wednesday November 08th, 2017. Mr. Michael Aboud dedicates this Honorary Doctorate to his staff.
Chairman’s Message to ASSL Staff
Honorary Doctorate of Entrepreneurship and Innovation - University of Trinidad & Tobago, 2017
I am truly honored and humbled to have accepted this honorary doctoral degree for Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). At the ceremony, the UTT orator did a splendid summarization of my work and accomplishments.
Let me admit that such achievements could not be an outcome of…… a one-man effort. It is rather the outcome of collective efforts of the people of who have been alongside me during my life’s journey: my family, fellow leaders, directors, executives and especially, the many dedicated men and women of Amalgamated Security Services Limited (ASSL). It is on behalf of these people that I accepted this award. Allow me, therefore, to dedicate it to you, as your dedicated efforts and service must not go unrecognized. Special acknowledgment must also be given to ASSL's Executive Team and to The University, as the National University of Trinidad and Tobago, for its achievements and significant contributions to education and research.
When I was offered this Honorary Doctorate, I needed to understand why I might be worthy of such honor, then I reflected on my colourful and somewhat unusual journey of successes that bought me here today. I am far from being an academic achiever, however, I am a huge admirer of anyone who takes interest to such an extent that they become expert in their field. By this honour, I accept recognition of achieving expertise in the respective fields of the award.
As Chairman, Advisor and Director of many companies regionally, and Chief Executive Officer of Amalgamated Security, I have always maintained focus and supported higher education and instilled the need for it by creating an environment for practical application of knowledge; I recognized the value of academic knowledge as a sound investment towards business improvement and self-actualization and, also established, participated and invested in several mentorship, recognition and award programs focused on self-improvement. I can tell you that we are a stronger, more educated and a community fixated set of organizations because of that drive towards academic achievement which has allowed us to exceed academic requirements within the various industries in which we operate, and in many instances, set higher benchmarks for the industry.
I am truly humbled to be recognized for my contribution to sound Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I am blessed and thankful for the opportunity to use my talent in a way that has benefited so many.
In summation, a good education is a foundation for guaranteeing a successful outcome and its value cannot be overstated; that, and hard work with sacrifices always pay off. A proper education is the tool to escape poverty, to obtain gainful employment, create wealth, raise the standard of living, and most of all, to empower the next generation to live better lives. The surest way to empower an individual is to educate him.
As I conclude my message I must say that I was honoured to have shared the stage with the 2017 graduates of UTT. I sincerely appreciate the conferring of this Honorary Doctorate degree upon me and will forever carry it with pride and humility and allow it to serve as a testament to the value of contributing to one’s community. And finally, I would like to say that our footprints on the sands of time which we leave behind as part of our legacy are often made with impressions of varying intensities and this one will surely last a lifetime.
Thank you

Director and Head of Caribbean Forensic Services, Maurice J. ABoud, PhD. presented a paper on Understanding the Impact of Forensic Science on the Criminal Justice System, see excerpt below:
Understanding the Impact of Forensic Science on the Criminal Justice System Maurice J. Aboud, PhD.
1* 1Caribbean Forensic Services, 11 Taylor Street, Woodbrook, Trinidad & Tobago
After attending this presentation, attendees will understand the impact of forensic science on the criminal justice system. Attendees will gain a greater appreciation for forensic science, its applications and how it can be used to help assist the fight against crime.
In the Caribbean Region, we are facing some challenging times with regard to crime and its impact on our society. Law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice system are inundated with casework and public pressure for higher conviction rates. Forensics Science can provide one such avenue to assist law enforcement agencies, the criminal justice system and increase the public’s confidence in the overall justice system. The purpose of forensics science is to assist in proving that a crime has been committed, establish key evidence of a crime, help identify a suspect or victim, put the suspect and victim into contact at a crime scene and corroborate suspects or victim’s testimony.
It is important to understand how forensic science can aid in converting evidence to valuable information which is then used in the criminal justice system for prosecution, conviction and exoneration. Law enforcement agencies spend a great deal of effort and time trying to collect forensic evidence starting from the crime scene and throughout the entire investigative process. While in the Caribbean region there are shortfalls in many of the steps within the process, the focus of this discussion would be understanding the impact it has and not analysing the deficiencies, although some may be highlighted throughout the discussion.
Prosecutors on the other hand have a greater inclination to move forward with a case if forensic evidence is present, as it provides them with a “smoking gun” to help prove a suspects’ guilt. The need for forensic evidence ultimately trickles down to the jurors who “expects” forensic evidence and without it raises an addition form of doubt that may or may not exist.
In summary the use of forensic science can have a great impact for law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice system which ultimately can yield to higher public confidence and greater social coexistence.
