The G.I.S. Department has 12 years of experience in developing G.I.S. applications, and a combined experience of 20 years in designing and developing databases. The Department has transitioned from publishing web maps via the use of Arc View's object-oriented programming language. Avenue, to developing feature-rich web mapping applications with the use of Open Layers and ArcIMS as display tools, MapGuide Open Source and ArcSDE as deployment platforms, all while maintaining MS SQL version 7 to 2008 as back-end databases. The introduction of OpenLayers and ArcIMS tools have enhanced the web mapping applications beyond mere map display tools, and support the following functionalities: web editing; geofence creation; marker creation, 2-D and 3-D rendering. The use of MS SQL Spatial has supported not only the storage and querying of spatial data, but also supports the algorithm for finding least-cost routes in a network and the geolocation of closet features.
